Trip Description

From May 17-20, we intend to bring eight students to Washington, D.C, home of our nation's capital. On the field trip, students will have 4 days to immerse themselves in solving a complex problem that policy makers and politicians face every day- how to overcome education inequity. Why is it that one's race and socioeconomic background predetermines where a student will live, what school they will attend, and what quality of education they will receive? Why are some students from privileged backgrounds afforded more opportunities and more resources to do well and be successful in school while others from low-income backgrounds are offered so much less?

Students will meet with congressmen and staffers on Capitol Hill, scholars at renowned think tanks, as well as young, college students who were in their shoes not too long ago. They will come prepared with questions to ask regarding the topic of education inequality and put together a response in the form of a presentation summarizing the results of their four-day assignment.
